Welcome to Alcoa Elementary School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As the new principal at Alcoa Elementary School, I am thrilled at the incredible opportunity we have to make a lasting positive impact on your children’s lives.  It's a responsibility I don't take lightly, because children see themselves through the eyes of the adults in their lives.  With that in mind, we have a new vision and mission statement for our school.

Attitude + Effort = Success

Students and staff alike are encouraged to have a positive attitude and to give their very best effort.  That’s what success looks like at AES!  To go with that, we also have three new school-wide behavior expectations:

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Be Your Best

Students and staff work together to create a mutually respectful environment, emphasizing personal responsibility, and striving to be the very best version of ourselves we can be! The new positive behavior approach involves teachers modeling and teaching appropriate behaviors so students can learn what being respectful and responsible looks like at school.  Parents are encouraged to continue this approach at home.  Students learn best with consistency and these valuable skills will help your children be successful throughout life!

In addition to learning social skills, PreK-2nd grade students learn foundational reading skills that are critical to their future reading successes. At AES, we screen all students three times a year, monitoring their growth and progress in literacy. If students need additional help in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, or comprehension, we set aside an additional 45 minutes each day called Tornado Time and customize instruction to meet students’ individual needs.  If your child is having difficulty in reading, his/her teacher will be in contact with you about their progress and ways you can help at home.

We have an open door policy at AES and encourage parents to visit, volunteer, and be an integral part of AES! All parents are welcome and encouraged to come to our Parent Advisory meetings. Please let us know how we can help improve your child’s educational experience. We strive for excellence and continuous improvement.  We value your feedback.  Also, let us know what you love about AES. Our teachers and staff work very hard to provide the very best possible experience for your child, and it’s always nice to hear what we are doing well in addition to ways we can improve.

Thank you for blessing us with the opportunity to be a part of your children’s lives. Not many people have occupations where they can make such an impact on shaping little lives, and it is a blessing and an honor to have that privilege.

Best Regards,

Monique Maples
